Rain is a huge part of our Oregon climate. Love it or hate it, it’s something that we’ll be getting used to now that autumn is here. Fortunately, your HVAC system is built to withstand all sorts of different outdoor weather conditions. While rain won’t damage your system, there are some key things to remember when it comes to keeping it protected during the wettest days of the year.
Heavy Rain and Flooding:
HVAC systems are built with highly durable materials like steel, copper, and aluminum. Electrical components are sealed up, and ventilation and drainage are all considered during the design to minimize the risk of water damage. For that reason, normal amounts of rainfall shouldn’t cause problems. But when there are heavy amounts of rain for extended periods of time or even flooding, some issues can arise. For example, if water rises above the base of the outdoor unit and there is standing water, this could cause damage to the electrical parts, motor, and more. If there has been large amount of water around the exterior unit, or parts of it have been immersed at all, don’t turn on the machine until you’ve called our team at Specialty Heating and Cooling. In these cases, it may be necessary for a professional to inspect it before using it again.
Power Concerns
Sometimes, flash floods can happen around Oregon. If that happens, large amounts of water can accumulate quickly and could cause a problem with the electrical components of the system. If a flash flood occurs, power the system off immediately. You don’t want to use electricity if there is a flood or flood warning. If water does accumulate, wait to turn the machine on until the water is gone and you’ve talked to an HVAC professional.
Issues with Metal Parts
If your system is consistently exposed to rain or other moisture, rust and corrosion can happen on the metal parts. Regular professional maintenance, which includes close inspections and cleaning can help prevent deterioration like this and ensure the protective coating doesn’t wear down too much.
